Love this little "forest of things". I too have been on the journey of bringing to the surface many traditions that have been forgotten from my heritage, partly through modernism and partly through the life of an immigrant family. It is indeed weaving threads of the old into the new. Honouring what was with what is now. I feel inspired by this catalogue of generational remembrance. If I started it now, oh what kind of things will be born in its pages generations from now. Thank you for that. And for this awareness about the pipelines in Michigan. My partner and I were recently exploring Michigan. The lakes there are absolutely magnificent. A living breath. It is a big thing to protect such important, massive, foundational ecosystems. Thanks for that work too <3 May the waters run free, pure and wild, as they are meant to. With love, Marija.

Marija, I completely agree that now is the time to start recording more things. Even if they seem insignificant to us in the moment. What a gift they will be down the line. I'm so glad you enjoyed Michigan! It truly is such a special place so close to my heart. Hopefully at least spreading awareness of its sensitivity will do some good.

Interesting that grandfather chose Canada Dry over the local, older, ginger ale Vernor's of Detroit. Maybe because Canada Dry is less sweet and balanced the sugàr.

Something similar can be made with rum.

I've been writing a recipe collection for my grandson's inheritance since he began preserving and cooking with me as a toddler.

I thought the same thing about the Canada Dry vs Vernors! It's a Michigan classic! That's one thing I guess I'll never know. Maybe I'll have to try it with Vernors too and see how it turns out. I love love love that you're writing your own collection for your grandson too. What I would give to have something similar myself. He is very lucky!

I’m so taken with the idea of a swylga. All that history, and the recipes! What an amazing tradition. But also devastated by the decision of your law makers. The insanity of it! It is a long fight you have ahead of you and one that must be fought! My heart is with you ♥️

I know! I would love to start a record of my own, just need to figure out the right format for it. What a treasure trove that would be! And thank you for the well wishes, it wasn't overly surprising, just another setback. There will still be people who will always speak out though.

Thank you for sharing your story about your great great grandfather! I've also started to write more down about my family. I recently spoke with my mom about her health history - the kinds of things we don't necessarily tell doctors (or that they don't care to record). We live in a time where information is shared openly with the world, but our own experiences and history aren't necessarily recorded as diligently. So glad to hear about other people doing this, too.

I love that you're doing that! And you are so right, we put so much information out into the world, but quickly is it lost to the digital ethers?? Things just disappear on the internet. I've thought about that with photos in particular. We used to have all of these wonderful photo albums, now it's all online and nothing feels tangible anymore. I think writing all of this down is a beautiful offering to those who've come before and those who will come after. You don't realize how important something so simple may be to future generations.

So interesting! I didn't know Vernors was started by a pharmacist either.
